There are many options to choose from. Below we set out just some of the types and styles of window available today. Most companies will be able to demonstrate a wide range of styles with different functionality and strengths and weaknesses so that you can identify the one that most suits you requirements and have something that is totally tailored to your personal requirements.
- Tilt and Turn windows
Tilt and turn windows represent the vast majority of double glazed windows. The owner has the option to either tilt the window inwards slightly or turn it fully and have it wide open.
As these windows can also be opened fully, this allows easy cleaning both inside and outside. Tilt and turn windows are excellent in respect of large window spaces as they provide unobstructed views and lots of natural light into a room.
As you have the ability to tilt the windows inward just a small amount, this style is particularly suitable for family homes with young children as the risk of children falling out or getting fingers trapped is significantly reduced or virtually eliminated – this operates as a great safety feature.
Most windows:-
- are constructed from strong multi-chambered PVC with welded joints for additional strength
- have shoot bolts and locking cams to create the tightest closure.
- have multiple point locking mechanisms to beat the intruders.
- are internally glazed, improving security as glass cannot be taken out from the outside.
- Georgian bar windows
Georgian windows are not as popular as they historically used to be but they are perfect for adding uniqueness, individuality and a touch of style to a house. They are designed to replicate patterns used on Georgian period houses and there are many designs available to choose from. Bars are made to exactly match the colour of frames so they appear that they are actually part of the framework. This is even though they are often adhesive strips that attach to the panes.
- Casement windows
They are hinged on one side opening outwards. These windows open like doors (to the left or the right). This type of window is popular with regards to large, picture windows providing an unobstructed view when open and when closed. In addition they allow a significant amount of light into any room. Furthermore they can be angled to catch breezes thereby assisting household air circulation. Casement windows with leaded glass patterns are quite common.
The major disadvantage with these windows is that the external edges are continually exposed to the weather and if not shut the edges can quickly begin to look weathered and decayed. Dark frames can also fade around the edges when left open for a long duration in strong sunlight.
- Casement windows are highly engineered, warm, noise-reduced and secure for peace of mind. Most windows:-
- are internally glazed therefore glass cannot be removed from outside by burglars.
- have outer frames feature mitred and heat welded corners for complete weatherseal.
- have frames that are reinforced with galvanised steel where additional structural strength is needed.
- 90 degree opening hinge, where fitted, which offers special fire escape multi chamber internal frame construction providing superb thermal and insulation efficiency.
